Onyx Boox Palma

Design

The Onyx Boox Palma looks and feels like a smartphone, sized at 6.3 inches by 3.1 inches and weighing just 6 ounces. This makes it incredibly portable and perfect for those who want to read anywhere. Many reviewers praised how easily it fits in a pocket.

Its design includes a textured back that provides a comfortable grip and resists fingerprints, ensuring it stays clean and durable with daily use.

While its slim form factor enhances portability, critics from TechRadar mentioned that “it might be a missed opportunity to not include stylus support,” which would have broadened its functionality as both a reading and note-taking device.

Screen

The 6.13-inch HD Carta 1200 E Ink screen provides a sharp, 300ppi display, delivering text with clear precision, akin to a Kindle’s display.

Many reviewers appreciate its readability in various lighting conditions, noting that it’s glare-free even under direct sunlight.

“The screen is built to accommodate usual smartphone functions like browsing the web,” emphasizes Laptop Mag, highlighting its superior responsiveness compared to other e-readers.

Storage

With 128GB of built-in memory, you’ll comfortably host a massive library of ebooks, potentially numbering in the tens of thousands.

The inclusion of a microSD slot allows you to expand the storage by adding up to 1TB, making room for even more content, including rich media like audiobooks.

This flexibility means you don’t need to sacrifice your favorite titles, even when traveling light.

As stated by experts, “It’s an e-reader that outlasts any other e-reader’s battery, and offers a freshly unique look.” Upgrading and expanding storage ensures you have endless reading options at your fingertips.

Battery Life

This ereader stands out with its lasting battery capabilities that keep you focused on your reading longer.

You’ll enjoy about seven to nine days of use with light reading, thanks to the efficient battery. Users can expect around two days of use when adding more app interactions or Wi-Fi usage, as noted by TechRadar. This makes it ideal for those who prioritize reading over constant app engagement.

TechRadar shares that while fast charging isn’t part of the package, you can rely on the original charger to keep the device powered. The reader’s rechargeable battery ensures you stay ready for your literary adventures.

Software & File Format Support

The device operates on Android 11, opening the door to Google Play Store and enabling you to download multiple e-reader apps, offering you the best choices for reading apps beyond Amazon. You can access popular apps like Kindle, Kobo, and Nook, comfortably expanding your library options.

Reviewers noted the flexibility provided by the wide range of supported formats, including EPUB, PDF, and MP3, allowing you to view documents and listen to audiobooks or music. You can also upload your own files using the BOOXDrop tool to transfer content easily from your computer.

You’ll appreciate the Palma’s ability to handle formats like CBZ for comics and MOBI for books, making it versatile for consuming various media types. Seamlessly managing most of your reading and listening needs without sticking solely to one ecosystem was a highlight noted by experts.

Extras

With the included silicon case, you’ll find your Palma well-protected, allowing you to focus more on enjoying your vast library of ebooks rather than on accidental damage. This case is a thoughtful addition, especially for a device so pocketable.

It’s a slim, lightweight case, favored by reviewers for the added grip it provides. Yet, some experts expressed disappointment at the absence of stylus support, which could have expanded the Palma’s utility beyond pure reading, turning it into a versatile note-taking device. “Stylus support would’ve made the Palma unbeatable,” remarked TechRadar.

The potential for stylus input complements the device’s size and the large number of apps available through the Google Play Store. Without it, creatives might miss out on easy annotations or digital sketching capabilities. The Palma offers functionality but leaves room for enhancements in future updates.

The Bottom Line

This e-reader offers a crisp display and is easy to carry in any pocket, making it great for travel and quick reading sessions. It’s more versatile than typical e-readers due to access to the Google Play Store for apps. Perfect for those who read regularly or transition from phone reading. Reviewers note its long battery life as a major plus, so you won’t frequently reach for a charger. Yet, its size can feel cramped for extended reading, and the high price is a consideration when compared to traditional options.
